In 2003, in Washington, D.C., a restaurant opened under the name of Java Green Cafe. In 2004, the store converted its menu to a completely vegetarian one, serving a unique and delicious fare that pleased the palates of vegans and ardent carnivores alike. Immediately thereafter, the restaurant and its food became a success, receiving numerous accolades from eco-friendly, animal-friendly and vegetarian organizations, among them PETA's prestigious Proggy Award for 'setting the gold standard for others in the food industry to emulate.' A key to the restaurants success was, and continues to be, its cutting-edge utilization of plant proteins as meat substitutes in a variety of dishes.
In 2009, J Green Foods was launched to provide the restaurant and broader consumer market with best-in-class plant protein formulations ("Veggie Beef", "Veggie Chicken"), and to establish new categories of vegan protein products altogether that rely on nutrient-dense pre-industrial grains. The reaction was immediate. Major universities such as Georgetown, John Hopkins, and Pittsburgh became customers. Whole Foods Markets followed and the rest, as they say, is history.
